The most famous prehistoric decorated cave in the world is Lascaux Cave in Montignac. Discovered in 1940 and made a Unesco World Heritage site in 1979, Lascaux cave is one of the great masterpieces of prehistoric art. It is around 200-metre long and is made up of alternating almost circular chambers and corridors. They are decorated with paintings and engravings of many different animals and enigmatic signs, which are remarkable for their detail, rich colours and lifelike quality.

The Lascaux Parietal Art International Centre for Cave Art in Montignac contains a reproduction of almost the entire original cave, created using the most modern virtual and imagery technology to make the experience as realistic as possible for visitors. It feels dark and damp with muffled sounds just like the atmosphere inside a real cave and the paintings, which are too fragile to be exposed to visitors, look exactly like the original ones.
In the Centre you can also learn about prehistoric art in all its aspects, and about how people lived during Prehistory.
