Monpazier is regarded as the prime example of a bastide town among the 300 which exist in South-West France.
It was founded by Edward I of England in 1284 and has changed very little from those days. It is labelled a “Grand Site National” with no less than 32 classified historic buildings. The town is perfectly quadrilateral and the streets run parallel to the longest sides from one end of the town to the other. Its centrepiece is an arcaded main square, the Place des Cornières which is surrounded by medieval and 17th C houses.
