Martel is also called ‘the Town with Seven Towers’ which were used for lookout posts or even prisons in the Middle-Ages.

It was a rich town at the beginning of the 12th century, situated at the crossroads of a merchants’ route. In the 19th century, its fortunes were revived by the sale of truffles and you can now ride on the steam train route which transported the black diamond along the cliffs of the Dordogne.
