Established in 1270 under the orders of King Henry III of England, Libourne is an English fortified port located on the confluence of the Isle and the Dordogne rivers and not far from the Gironde Estuary. It established its wealth as the first port on the Dordogne, 100kms inland. Most of its trade was in wine where boats loaded with barrels wood and salt, were loaded up.

Its attractive architectural heritage makes it a charming town, particularly noted for its central square surrounded by arches, its 15th century town hall, its quays and its must-see market which has been held on the central square three times a week for 600 years!
