The Gouffre de Padirac is a spectacular natural chasm which forms a gaping 75-meter-deep hole. For years it was known as the ‘Devils Hole’ and it wasn’t until 1889 that an intrepid explorer, Edouard-Alfred Martel, dared to venture in and discovered the underground river flowing below.

Ten years later it was opened to the public and now there are more than 450,000 visitors a year who enjoy a boat trip 103 m under the ground and a walking tour of the vast internal caverns, which are the second largest open to the public in Europe.
