The Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux, built in red stone, dominates the Dordogne Valley from its rocky spur.
The castle was built between the 13th and 17th centuries and saved from ruin by a Comic Opera singer, Jean Mouliérat in 1896. He restored it and installed a collection of furniture and art to represent the different periods of the château.
Next to the castle, the village of Bretenoux is a particularly well preserved example of a bastide town, with its checkerboard layout and its half-timbered houses and cobbled market place. There are houses from the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which evoke a rich past.
