Autoire is nestled into the hollow of a cirque near a spectacular thirty-metre waterfall.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, this sheltered situation attracted wealthy residents who had fine houses built and earned it the name “Petit Versailles”.

Dominating the valley is the Château des Anglais which was used as a lookout post and sheltered brigands during the Hundred Years War.

There is an attractive fountain and 11th C Romanesque church in origin, which has been beautifully restored with later alterations.
