Sarlat was the first town in France to benefit from the loi Malraux in the 1960s which led to the renovation of the entire medieval city centre. It has the highest density of classified buildings per metre square of any town in Europe and is classified as a Town of Art and History. Many of its monuments are famous: the house where La Boétie was born, the Lanterne des Morts and the cathedral.

Another attraction is the discovery of the town from the sky. A glass lift in the bell tower of the old church of St Marie takes you beyond the top of the tower from where you have a 360° panoramic view of the town below. There is a very popular market every Saturday morning with many local delicacies on sale, set against the backdrop of this extremely attractive historic town.
